WEST VIRGINIA WINS
FTA MANAGEMENT AWARD

(Washington , D. C., March 27, 2010) The Federation of Tax Administrators announced today that the West Virginia State Tax Department has won the 2010 Award for Outstanding Management and Organizational Initiative for its comprehensive integrated tax system and related adoption of best business practices and upgrading of technology skills.

Presentation of the award will take place during the FTA Annual Meeting, June 7 in Atlanta. The winner also been invited to make a presentation on the program during the annual meeting.

Judges commended the management of the project for its broad scope, its thoughtful foundation and for the adoption of good measures. They noted, “it goes to show what you can do with a modern database and how it’s the foundation for compliance. They had a big problem. It’s amazing they were able to do anything before integrating.” They complimented the agency for its “clear commitment by the agency from the top down that they needed to get this done,” and noted “this is the real deal in terms of impact,” and gave the agency leaders credit for developing the metrics to show the impact of the change.

The entries were judged by an independent panel consisting of Janet Gregor of Gregor and Associates, John Caggiano of the IRS Executive Development Program and Chuck Lacijan, staff director of the IRS Oversight Committee.

The Federation of Tax Administrators is a nonprofit organization composed of taxation and revenue departments of the fifty states, District of Columbia and New York City. Its mission is to improve the standards and methods of tax administration
